A man accused of being an electric cable thief was killed in a mob justice attack at Ngwaritsi village in Sekhukhune, Limpopo on Saturday.
RESCUED BY THE POLICE
Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the police received information about the mob justice attack and upon their arrival at the scene, they found the victim being attacked by the community, assaulting him with all sorts of objects. "The man who was identified as 29-year-old Thapelo Lekala was being accused of stealing cables," Ledwaba said. It is further alleged that the mob earlier took him to his residence to cut cable before attacking him. "The victim was rescued by the police and taken to the nearest hospital for medical attention. He succumbed to his injuries hospital later that day," added Ledwaba.
KILLING CONDEMNED
Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms. Hadebe urged the community to stop taking the law into their own hands but work with the police and report any criminal activities to the police to be investigated. The police have since launched a manhunt for Lekala's attackers and a murder case has been opened for investigation.
