Randfontein residents pick up the pieces after severe storm

Mop up operations underway in Randfontein

A mop-up operation is underway in Randfontein, west of Johannesburg, after the area was hit by a severe storm that ripped through residents' homes, causing structural damage yesterday. West Rand Municipality Mayor William Matseke confirmed that mop-up operations are at a progressive stage.

THE UNEXPECTED

Matseke said the area was attacked by an unexpected storm that wreaked havoc in their municipality. "We have around 90 affected families, but we managed to move them into empty houses that are being newly developed but have water and electricity. In Toekomsrus, we've spoken to the developer on that side to help us with empty units to accommodate those in need because we are still assessing the situation," he said. He added that Umphakathi Mall was badly affected and is currently not operational. "That's where we experienced several injured people (37) including three children. They were kept in the hospital overnight," said Matseke. He expressed gratitude to business owners who extended a helping hand. "We are very fortunate that we have business owners that have come forward to assist. We managed to give everyone food last night and served over 1000 meals to all those who were affected. Business people have pledged to assist because many of the residents don't have insurance, so it is up to us as the government to make sure that we build them houses," he said.

WHAT NOW?

Residents expressed frustration over the loss and damage of belongings from the severe storm. One of the residents, Melanie Mofokeng , who was not home during the storm said she got a call from her friend that the storm had damaged homes. "My mind paused for a moment because I could hear from my friend's tone that I was going to be shocked when I got home, which is exactly what I got : the shock of my life," she said. Mofokeng added, "When I arrived, everyone was frustrated, but at least the situation was a bit calmer after we were moved to a separate area, but we still have the issue of damaged goods." The resident said that the roof of her whole house was blown off and all her belongings were floating in water. "We are grateful for the developer who has given us a place to stay, but for how long? Where will I get money to replace everything. Many of us are unemployed or doing odd jobs?" she said.
