Residents of Nelson Mandela Bay woke up to widespread devastation, following flooding overnight that has claimed the lives of a man and a baby in Kariega.
TRAPPED
the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said at least 70 people have been relocated to safety, through 55 rescue operations while some remain trapped and are unable to vacate their homes because of the floods.Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya said that two people are still missing.
"Emergency services have worked throughout the night, and are still working and searching to assist people affected by the flooding. All residents are requested to take precautions," Soyaya added.
Soyaya urged residents to be on high alert as the rainy weather is expected to persist throughout the next few days.
BE CAREFUL
Meanwhile, City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has urged residents to exercise caution when using heating devices.
"During this cold front, residents are urged not to leave heating devices unattended while in use.This extremely cold temperatures are expected to continue until Monday and we have activated our Disaster Management Monitoring teams in all seven regions of the City of Johannesburg and all our 29 fire stations are fully operational and on high alert to respond to any emergencies which might occur," said EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.
