A suspect in the murder of Diseo Mosupa (30), an activist and youth development officer at Matjhabeng Local Municipality in the Free State, has been arrested. This comes after Mosupa's body was found buried in a used grave at a cemetery on Friday.
GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
Mosupa was reported missing by her father after he found her house ransacked and her car damaged. The Free State MEC for Social Development, Mathabo Leeto, condemned Mosupa's killing. "I don't know what must be done to stop the killing of women in the country, but as the Free State government, we need to do something about gender-based violence. Every time a woman goes missing, the outcome has now become the norm that she will be found dead, and the person behind the killing is the husband or a boyfriend," Leeto said. She added that, as the government, they need to come up with a solution because this is happening throughout the country.
SUSPECT ARRESTED
Free State Police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele confirmed that Mosupa was reported missing on July 12, 2024. "Upon receiving information about Mosupa's disappearance, a team comprising of police investigators, community members, and family members embarked on a thorough search, which led to a body being found at Thabong Cemetery in Welkom. The body, which was buried in a used grave, was exhumed on Friday morning by forensic investigators," Makhele said. He added that one suspect, aged 37, has been arrested and charged with murder. "The investigations are continuing. Anyone with information that can lead to more arrests can contact detective Sergeant Zuzeka Kobuwe of Welkom Detective Services," he said.
