One of the biggest beefs in the music industry between two industry heavyweights is officially over. Award-winning musicians and songstresses Thandiswa Mazwai and Simphiwe Dana have finally put aside their differences. The Afro-soul musicians literally kissed and made-up last week.
THEY DIDN'T GET ALONG FOR OVER DECADE
Music lovers witnessed one of the most beautiful moments when both singers shared a stage for the first time in many years. The pair did not breathe the same air for years. Sources close to the situation said during their youth days, they used to get along and were even signed by the same record company, Gallo Music Company, when it was still based in Rosebank, Johannesburg. "They were both signed by Gallo Music when they first started their solo career. That was after Thandiswa left Bongo Maffin," the source said. According to the source, the two singers grew apart when the recording company allegedly gave more attention to Thandiswa, who was apparently involved with a music executive known to ZiMoja. Thandiswa released her solo project Zabalaza with Gallo at the time in 2004, while Dana also released her debut album Zandisile the same year. "Simphiwe Dana felt sidelined and the fact that they were friends she felt like Thandiswa did not have her back and speak on her behalf because her music was not being promoted and well marketed as Thandiswa's music was," added the source. The friendship suffered even more when Dana reportedly dated the same music executive.
FRIENDSHIP SEALED WITH A KISS
In May, ZiMoja reported that the two songstresses squashed their beef when Thandiswa extended an olive branch by complimenting Dana on a sold-out show. Dana also sang Thandiswa's praises two months ago when she launched her new album Sankofa at the packed Big Arena in Carnival City. The beef between the two is a thing of the past, as they sealed their new-found friendship with a kiss over the weekend. It became clear that the two ladies have moved on from their past.
Mazwai shared the picture with a caption that read: My daughter says Sundays are for lovers. #sisterhood. As the elders did so shall the daughters l love that I was able to recreate this iconic photograph of Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba backstage somewhere, with some of the greatest singers on the mamaland today."
Celebrities like TV presenter and Somimusic were quick to congratulate the pair citing that they have always been waiting for this moment. When called for comment, Mazwai's publicist, Mariah McCloy, said Mazwai was on holiday. Dana could not be reached for a comment as her phone rang unanswered.
