Popular author Jackie Phamotse is not impressed with the latest trend of celebrity authors. Shortly after reality star Nonku William dropped her book titled Unapologetically Me, Phamotse took to social media to express how celebrity books lack honesty, vulnerability, and depth.
NOT IMPRESSED WITH THE LATEST TREND
Phamotse, who was successfully sued by former Miss South Africa and businesswoman Basetsana Kumalo and her husband Romeo Kumalo, said celebrities becoming authors is the new status symbol. In her social media post, Phamotse, not forgiving, wrote: "Being an author is not just a title or status symbol; it's a sacred responsibility to craft meaningful, well-researched content. A book's value lies in its substance, not just its marketability." She said a manuscript requires meticulous attention to detail, from cover design to paper quality, and most importantly, engaging content. She added that research is essential to creating a compelling narrative. "Biographies and memoirs demand a particular level of honesty, vulnerability and depth," Phamotse said.
HONESTY
Nonku is not the only celebrity to have penned an autobiography. Last year, another businesswoman and reality star, Shauwn "MaMkhize" Mkhize, released a book penned by former journalist and PR specialist Amanda Ngudle, which did not receive rave reviews. Phamotse said a storytelling approach falls short and authors must be honest instead of sharing frivolous tales. "Authors must be willing to share their authentic experiences, shedding light on unknown aspects of their lives." She said she is disheartened by the proliferation of poorly crafted. "celebrity" books. She explained: "These publications not only undermine the credibility of the writing community but also insult the very essence of storytelling."
RESPECT THE CRAFT
Just like in the case of MaMkhize, who was criticised for not telling her entire story, Phamotse said many of the celebrity books lack depth and substance. "Unfortunately, many celebrity books lack substance, relying on fame rather than literary merit. This is unacceptable," she said. This time around, Phamotse is not on a tirade by criticising only, but she has words of wisdom for the authors and the celebrities being written about. "To celebrity authors, I urge you to take your time, respect the craft, and strive for excellence. Read widely, study the masters and push yourself to create meaningful content. We love reading but don't make us hate reading your stories. Respect the reader and their money," she added.
