Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has described an incident of a security guard pepper-spraying angry clients as horrific. The guard who was stationed at the Home Affairs branch in Randburg, Johannesburg, has since been suspended.
DECISIVE ACTION
Schreiber said they've launched an investigation after he was made aware of the viral video this morning. He explained that the citizens were frustrated to learn that the systems were offline after spending hours at the branch. In the video, the security guard in question is seen waving a pepper spray as he demands members of the public to go outside. "I was appalled upon receiving this video at 10:50 this morning. An investigation was launched immediately, and by 5 pm, the individual in question was removed. On behalf of #TeamHomeAffairs, I apologise to all clients affected," said the minister on X. Schreiber announced that action had since been taken against the security.
INVESTIGATIONS
Schreiber said investigations revealed that there were IT-related challenges at the Randburg branch."This affirms the urgency of digital transformation so that our services become accessible in more locations and over the internet to reduce the need for anyone to stand in queues, he said.
