The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed the death of a Krugersdorp High School matric learner who got injured during a cricket match and later died in hospital. Retshegofetse Sennelo passed away in hospital on Saturday after sustaining a severe injury after colliding with a team mate at Christian Brothers College (CBC) in Boksburg.
SUCCUMBED TO INJURIES
In a statement, the school explained that the incident occurred during a First XI cricket match between Krugersdorp High School (KHS) and CBC. While fielding, two KHS players collided as they attempted to intercept a ball struck into the outfield. The school said their in-house paramedics were on scene during the incident and immediately took Retshegofetse to Netcare Sunward Park, while the other player was treated for concussion under his parents' care and later released from the hospital in Krugersdorp. " After undergoing an emergency operation at Sunward Park, the surgeons could not stop the internal bleeding and Retshegofetse passed away in the theatre on Saturday night. Our deepest condolences go out to Olga Sennelo, our SGB chairperson; Gomolemo, his brother; all the family members; and KHS staff who were at the hospital. Our prayers go out to Retshegofetse's beloved teammates and coaches, Sandile and Nene."
DEVASTATING
Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed shock over the deadly incident and said the department will engage both schools to assess safety protocols surrounding school sporting activities. "We are devastated by the tragic passing of this young sportsman. Losing a learner in such circumstances is deeply painful, and we extend our sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire school community. We call for strength and comfort for all those affected during this difficult time," said MEC Chiloane. For more information, contact the Gauteng Department.
