A production that is the River's spin-off and stars, among others, Presley Cheneyagae is being accused of starving extras. The Mzansi Magic show called Co-Breezy is currently being filmed in Yeoville, Johannesburg, and extras allege that they are not being given food on set. They claim that only the cast and crew are being taken care of.
LONG HOURS
A source close to the production who spoke to ZiMoja said they are expected to be on set as early as 6am and even getting breakfast is a mission. "For them to even get breakfast is something else, because they get there early, even before some of the cast members, and they don't complain, because obviously, they need the money. Most days, they spend the whole day there and don't get food," an insider told ZiMoja. The show is being filmed in Yeoville, which is notorious for drugs and also for not being safe, but staff are allegedly expected to work without security. "There's no security whatsoever, and the staff's lives are at risk. Someone who stays in the area noticed this, and he came and warned them, saying that he knew that they didn't have security. This means that their lives are at risk. Equipment is not safe, and neither are we. They've raised this up but to no avail," another insider said.
NO RESPONSIBILITY TAKEN
Although contentious issues have been raised with the relevant parties, it is alleged that nobody wants to do anything about the situation. "They just turn a blind eye to issues raised; they don't fix anything, which is discouraging, and the staff don't know what to do anymore. This is a big production for Mzansi Magic, and what is happening on set is not right," the source said. However, Mzansi Magic denied the allegations, saying that there was enough food for everyone and that there was leftover food that was given to community members, as they didn't want to waste any food. "We can confirm that there has never been an instance where extras have not been fed," Mzansi Magic spokesperson Portia Hlongwane said.
