With his companies facing up to a ten-year ban from doing business with the government, controversial businessman Edwin Sodi has expanded his nightclub business. Last year, he acquired a stake at LIV Sandton, formerly known as Taboo, a popular celeb hangout spot in the richest African square mile.
BECOMING A NIGHT CLUB KING
ZiMoja can today reveal that another celeb hot spot, Liv on Bree in Cape Town, is opening up on the 29th of November. Sodi is the majority shareholder at the new Cape Town hot spot, and the who's who and A-class guests in the entertainment industry are expected to descend at the launch. A source privy to the information said: "He owns the place now. It's a done deal. He has been finalising everything this month. The idea came about early this year. He is happy with his latest project. Tenders may be a thing of the past because the media always want to know about his government dealings," said the source.
NO MORE TENDERS
Another source said in the last three months, Sodi has been giving out hints on his social media posts. "Cape Town nightlife will never be the same again. Edwin knows the business inside out. The Sandton Liv is a success and the Cape Town one? There is no doubt about it," the source said. Sodi refused to comment when approached, citing it as a private matter.
Sodi's R255-million asbestos contract fraud and corruption case was heard at the Bloemfontein High Court in June this year, where he appeared alongside his co-accused Ace Magashule, Moroadi Cholota, Sello Radebe, Kgotso Manyeki, Mahlomola Matlakala, Nthimotse Mokhesi, Sarah Mlamleli, Nozipho Molikoe, Albertus Venter, and Margaret-Ann Deidericks. The trial date was set for April 15 to 23 June 2025.
