Condolences pour in for international songstress Angie Stone

Angie Stone ha passed away

Three-time Grammy-nominated songstress Angela Laverne "Angie" Stone has passed at the age of 63. The American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer was killed in a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama, last night. 


HER DAUGHTER CONFIRMED 


Stone and her band members were travelling to Atlanta following a concert in Mobile, Alabama, when their Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van was involved in a vehicle collision. Her daughter, Diamond Stone, wrote online, "My mommy is gone." Stone, known for her hit Wish I Didn't Miss You, also had a son, Michael D'Angelo Archer II, with fellow R&B singer D'Angelo. A representative for the singer confirmed to the US media that Stone was killed in a car crash in Montgomery, Alabama, on her way home from a show. Stone was the only person who died in the crash. Stone released 10 solo albums and was nominated for three Grammys, including Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 2003 and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 2004.


CONDOLENCES POURING IN


Fellow celebrities have been sending condolences to her family since the news of her passing broke last night. In a Facebook post, singer and actress Jennifer Hudson wrote: "I can't believe this! What a loss!!! Angie Stone was a true pioneer. Another one of our great soul singers is gone too soon. Prayers up for her family and loved ones." Award winner and songwriter Anthony Hamilton also paid tribute to Stone in a heartfelt message on his social media page and said he was devastated. "Queen! Angie. I'm devastated. Sending prayers and love to your family, your children, and the millions who loved you. You will forever be in our hearts. Rest in eternal peace. Comedian Jamie Foxx said Stone's passing hurt. He also described her as an incredible songwriter, artist, and person. "Never thought in 1 million years that this would happen… Rest in power."


SHE WAS INDUCTED INTO THE WALL OF FAME 


In 2024, she was inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame. She also won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards in her music career, spanning almost five decades. She rose to fame in the late 1970s as a founding member of the hip-hop trio The Sequence when she was only 16. In the early 1990s, she became a member of the R&B trio Vertical Hold. She released her debut solo album, Black Diamond, in 1999. The Sequence recorded a hit song, Funk You Up. The track was later sampled by Dr Dre for his single Keep Their Heads Ringin and by Bruno Mars in Uptown Funk.
