Opposition parties have continued to call the current sitting President Cyril Ramaphosa's administration worse than of his predecessor Jacob Zuma's 'wasted' nine years. The comments were made during the day 2 of the South African State Of The Nation Adress (SONA) debate that took place at the Cape Town City Hall on Wednesday.
FIVE WASTED YEARS
Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen was the first member of parliament to call out Ramaphosa's five years at the office as disastrous. The DA leader reminded Ramaphosa on how he became a hope for South Africa when he promised to do better during a dinner that was held at Davos in Switzerland when he took office, "You convinced world leaders that you were going to do better than the "nine wasted years' by your predecessor Zuma,'.
"You mister president are somehow guilty of something worse than that you once accused Zuma of. You accused President Zuma of presiding over the nine wasted years, you sir presided over five wasted years,' Steeenhuisen said.
FUSS
As if that was not enough, Steenhuinsen further said: "If you thought we lost some gains under Zuma administration than under this administration we have gained losses. To quote one of the ANC's favourite thinkers line by Karl Marx, history repeats itself. First as a tragedy and as a fuss and that is what you have brought on South Africa. What happened under Zuma was a tragedy, what is happening under your leadership is a fuss.'
Economic Freedom Party Deputy president Flyod Shivambu was the other opposition party member who criticized Ramaphosa's leadership.
REVERSE GEAR
Shivambu accused Ramaphosa of putting the country in a reverse gear. "Everything we've made progress on is going backwards. We never thought that we would have the crisis of electricity. Who ever thought we would have water shedding? We have job losses because of this man. He's taking the country in reverse gear the same way he did when he was utilising his first car,' he said.
NANNY CABINET
Inkatha Freedom Party member of parliament and Scopa Chairperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said that an electricity minister in the presidency duplicates the responsibilities of ministers in a bloated mega presidency. "Every time your minister don't perform, instead of firing the you protect them by taking things into the presidency. Be decisive, Mr President. Fire them. Don't have a nanny cabinet. If they are not working, fire them. It seems to us you have no confidence in your own ministers,' he said.
Hlengwa further said that the president was overstretching himself taking everything into his office. Ramaphosa is expected to respond to the members of parliament later on Thursday.
