The Democratic Alliance's Retief Odendaal has taken over Nelson Mandela Bay Metro as mayor after ANC lost its position over a motion of no confidence.
Former mayor Eugene Johnson was removed through a motion of no confidence during a council meeting in Gqeberha on Wednesday.
Johnson's deputy Buyelwa Mafaya and chief whip Wandile Jikeka were also removed.
AN ATTORNEY TAKES OVER

An attorney by profession Odendaal, served as a Mandela Bay councillor from 2009. Between 2016 and 2018 he was the MMC for budget and treasury until the ANC returned to govern the metro.
The motion to remove Johnson was tabled by the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), with 62 councillors voting in support of the motion and 58 voting against it. In July, opposition parties in the metro signed a coalition agreement in a move to get rid the ANC-led coalition. The coalition included the Democratic Alliance (DA), ACDP, African Independent Congress (AIC), Abantu Integrity Movement (AIM), Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus), Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) and the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
MONTHS OF NEGOTIATIONS
The agreement between the parties was a culmination of almost four months of negotiations to form a new government that is based on shared values, principles, commitments and priorities.The parties in coalition agreed that it would take listening to each other and learning from past mistakes in order to yield positive results.
