The DA's Mpho Phalatse was ousted as mayor of the City of Johannesburg on Thursday afternoon through a motion of no confidence which was caused by a multi party coalition breakdown.
?MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE?
The motion was tabled by three minority parties, the African Transformation Movement (ATM), African Independent Congress (AIC), and Al-Jamah-Ah in the city council on Thursday morning. Phalatse was also ousted in September 2021 through a motion of confidence tabled by the ANC and she was replaced by Dada Morero. Phalatse took the matter to court and it ruled in her favour. The Johannesburg High Court ruled against Morero's appointment and found that it was unlawful, unconstitutional and invalid and ordered that it was to be reviewed and set aside.?
SECOND MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE?
In November last year, Phalatse faced a second motion of no confidence proposed by Margaret Arnolds of the AIC. The motion was withdrawn at the last minute with Morero saying the opposition parties were instructed by the leadership to withdraw the motion. Phalatse said earlier on Thursday that she had survived the motion before and she believed she would come out victorious again. ?
DA REJECTED A DEAL WITH PA
The PA has offered to rejoin the multi-party coalition, under the condition that it is given two MMC positions in the council. The DA rejected the proposal and offered PA one MMC position and a chairperson position for one of the Section 79 committees. PA president Gayton McKenzie said earlier on Thursday that the DA Federal Executive rejected the deal that his party put on the table on Wednesday night. "The DA approached us and we said give us an offer. The offer was to take one MMC position and we said you're playing. Last night at about midnight they gave us another offer and we said 'hell no'." MacKenzie told the media.
