The second G4S guard ,who was arrested in connection with Thabo Bester's prison escape, briefly appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court today. The case against Motanyane Masukela (51) was remanded to 3 May for a possible bail application. Masukela was arrested on Tuesday afternoon at the Mangaung Correctional Centre while on duty.

 Masukela is the fifth suspect to be arrested for aiding Bester in making his great escape in May 2022 at Mangaung Prison.  One of the suspects is his former colleague Senohe Matsoara. They both face charges of assisting an inmate to escape and defeating the ends of justice.  

FUTURE OF G4S 

Justice and Correctional Services minister Ronald Lamola said he will announce the future of G4S at the Mangaung Correctional Centre by the end of this week. He said he will reveal whether or not the security company will continue managing the prison or their contract will be cancelled. "We have read the contract. We are seeking legal advice on the contract, because if we act on emotions and just wake up and cancel the contract, the possibility of us harming the livelihoods of the remaining inmates is high. We need to follow the terms of the contract or whatever that may necessitate the cancellation of the contract."
