The City of Tshwane has confirmed that Zanzou was operating illegally and wasn't authorised to operate as a nightclub. This follows an uproar after a former employee exposed the brutal activities that took place behind the scenes at the club while patrons were enjoying themselves. The former bouncer released a series of videos on social media of other bouncers torturing patrons and sexually violating them in the kitchen.
ILLEGAL ESTABLISHMENT
During a compliance raid on Wednesday, the chief of the Tshwane Metro Police Department, Yolande Faro, said Zanzou was under investigation as they possibly contravened the city's bylaws. "It is not zoned to be a nightclub, so we're looking into all of that. We are not only looking into Zanzou, but we are also looking into the other clubs that are affiliated with the owners and we will make sure that the whole strip, including all the nightclubs in Tshwane, are compliant."
TOO LATE
On Tuesday, the club's management said they had fired the security company whose guards were involved in torturing patrons. Thereafter, MMC for Health in Tshwane, Tshegofatso Masheba, revealed that the said security company does not comply with standards set by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA). "We also learned that the security company that is operating here is not PSIRA compliant. So those are some of the challenges that we need to deal with. The employees here also came out to complain." The manhunt for eight suspects continues by the South African Police Service.
Police confirmed they were investigating various offences, including assault, assault GBH, crimen injuria and kidnapping. Police confirmed that three of the victims linked to the circulating videos have opened cases at Brooklyn SAPS.
