The directors of Zanzou nightclub are set to hold a media briefing in Johannesburg today. This follows a series of videos from 2022 and 2023 surfacing on social media depicting patrons of the club being tortured and sexually assaulted allegedly by bouncers at the nightclub.
ARREST
Last month, the police arrested a 41-year-old Congolese man in connection with an incident that took place at the club in January 2023 where young men celebrating their matric results were assaulted. The accused appeared briefly at the Pretoria Magistrates Court yesterday, facing fourteen charges, including compelled sexual assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. His identity remains undisclosed, pending an upcoming identity parade for the latest complainant.
ANOTHER VICTIM CAME FORWARD
The court heard yesterday that a seventh victim has come forward; hence, the state asked for a postponement. Speaking outside court, uMkhonto Wesizwe Party Gauteng spokesperson Bafana Mahlabe urged more victims to come forward.
"We encourage more of them to come out because we believe this is not an isolated incident. It's widespread. There are even serious allegations of people losing their lives in some of these establishments. This matter must be taken seriously, and we urge the media to investigate further," said Mahlabe.
Mahlabe also demanded further arrests, including those of the club owners. "Police must act swiftly and ensure all those responsible are arrested. The net must be cast wider, not just for those who committed the acts but also for the establishment's owners. These incidents could not have happened without their knowledge."
