State might not have a case against Sizok'thola presenter

Xolani Maphanga and his co-accused will be back in court next month

The case against Moja Love presenter Xolani Maphanga (39) and his co-accused bodyguard Bongani Mkhabela (33) has been postponed again. The pair appeared before the Soshanguve Regional Court today on three charges of attempted murder and one of trespassing following an incident that occurred during the filming of Moja Love's drug-busting show Sizok'thola in March this year.

THE STATE MIGHT NOT HAVE A CASE

During their appearance today, the senior prosecutor requested a postponement before the state provided the defence lawyers with the contents of the docket. The prosecutor also told the presiding magistrate that he needed to consult with the witnesses and make sure if the state has a case or not.

Maphanga and Mkhabela first made their appearance at the Soshanguve Magistrate's Court but the matter was later moved to the Regional Court due to the charge being amended from assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) to attempted murder.

CASE POSTPONED TO OCTOBER

The pair, who are currently out on R5000 bail each, are accused of assaulting three people in Soshanguve while filming Sizok'thola. A case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened at Soshanguve Police Station after the alleged assault. At the time, NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said that on March 14, the two, together with crew members, allegedly went to the complainant's house in Soshanguve looking for drugs they claimed she was selling. "When they could not find the drugs, it is alleged the two started to assault a woman who is a complainant in the matter with a sjambok and choked her and suffocated her brother. Three days after the incident, the woman reported the matter to the police," Mahanjana said. The two will be back in court on 16 October.
