While many people look forward to spending time with family members during the December holidays, some people experience loneliness during this time and this can hurt their mental health.
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Many people are spending time with their families but for others, these holidays are a painful reminder of the fact that they have nobody. "It is a sad reality that some people find themselves in this predicament where they feel lonely and have nobody to enjoy the festive season with. But my advice is that people should try as best they can to always surround themselves with other people, especially friends, even if it's not blood family," said psychologist Jaimee Taitz.
SUICIDE INCREASES DURING DECEMBER HOLIDAYS
In South Africa, many people take their own lives during the festive season and this is due to many reasons, such as loneliness among other things. "Sadly, it is during this time that we see a surge in the suicide rate, because some people feel lonely and that they have nobody. For some, it's because they've lost employment and have no hope. Finding activities that one can do alone to take one's mind off things can help," she said.
AVOID SECLUSION
According to Taitz, it is important to try as best as possible not to be alone, as that can increase anxiety and feelings of loneliness. "People think the most when they are on their own, so to avoid this, people should try to be with other people to socialise, like eat out, etc, in that way they'll keep themselves occupied and have less time to overthink," she explained.
