Former American president Donald Trump has come out victorious in the 2024 US presidential elections and thanked voters for electing him as the 45th and 47th president. Trump secured 267 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.
A GOOD RUN
The build-up to the highly contested race captured the world's attention for months. During his speech, Trump (78) expressed gratitude to his supporters who backed him in the election and labelled his campaign as "historical". "This will forever be remembered as the day the American people regained control of their country," he said. Trump said the race was not an easy one following an attempt on his life in July. "God spared my life. The task before us will not be easy but I will bring every ounce of energy, spirit and fight that I have in my soul. I intend to govern by the motto: "promises made, promises kept."
NO WARS
During President Joe Biden's term, the world witnessed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US pullout from Afghanistan in 2021 and Israel's multi-front conflict in West Asia. Trump said there won't be any wars during his tenure. "I'm not going to start wars, I'm going to stop wars. We had no wars for four years during my presidency," Trump said. Trump defeated US vice president and attorney Kamala Harris who was endorsed by outgoing President Joe Biden. This is not the first time Trump has prevented a female politician from making history as the first female president in the US. In 2016, he defeated former First Lady Hillary Clinton who said then that she hoped that Trump would be a successful president.
