Popular telenovela, Umkhokha: The Curse, has been facing some challenges in their latest season, with a handful of actors resigning and some being written off the script. Now Mzansi Magic has announced that the telenovela has been canned and the cast and crew have not been remunerated.

NO SALARIES

In a letter by Rhythm World Productions sent to staff by Chief Operating Officer, Nobukhosi Ndlovu, they said that salaries had been delayed "due to cashflow challenges" and they will pay once they receive funds. "Kindly accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. We further note the level of stress that the late notification may cause."

The channel also announced that another popular telenovela, My Brother's Keeper, has also come to an end, stating that as part of their strategic evolution, a few shows will be concluding in 2025. "This exciting shift means that new shows will be fresh and shorter to enable more diversity of voices in telling Mzansi stories. While the channel will always cherish its beloved shows, some will be making way for new series and telenovelas that are sure to captivate audiences,' the statement read.

REPLACEMENTS

The new shows replacing the two have not yet been announced. Umkhokha: The Curse began as a 13-part series and became a gem for viewers, and it even released a gospel album, Wonk' AmaJudiya.

Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Channels at M-Net said: " We are deeply grateful to Rhythm World Productions and the outstanding cast and crew who turned these shows into the phenomenon they have become.'
