Umhlobo Wenene FM is mourning the loss of popular Pastor Nomonde Patience Vakalisa. She passed away at the age of 47 in the early hours of this morning. The passing of the popular co-host of Imvuselelo show was confirmed by SABC Eastern Cape business manager Loyiso Bala during a live broadcast on the station's popular show Khanya Gqiyazana this morning.
ANOTHER LOSS FOR RADIO
Bala announced that more details regarding her passing would be shared in due time. Pastor Nomonde, or 'Smondz' as she was affectionately known, joined Umhlobo Wenene FM on 1 July 2008 and quickly became an integral part of the station in the last 16 years. She began her journey as the host of the Top 30 chart show Izikhokho Zomzantsi. In 2009, she co-hosted the Break-a-Slice-fast breakfast show alongside 'Slyso'. Bala said in a statement that in 2012, Pastor Vakalisa embraced her passion for gospel music and ministry by hosting Iqonga Lomculo Wevangeli before co-hosting Imvuselelo with the late Reverend Joe Lofafa, then Reverend Faleni, until June 2022." She later shared the platform with Reverend Keketso Bloem from 2022 until March of that year. In 2023, she became the main anchor of Ngenani Emasangweni Ngendumiso.
SHE HAS BEEN SICK FOR MONTHS
In May, Vakalisa shared with her listeners that she had fallen ill and was paralysed. Her condition took a turn for the worse and Umhlobo Wenene FM hosted a tribute and fundraising concert in her honour. "This is a testament to the love and respect she garnered throughout her career. Pastor Vakalisa was more than a broadcaster; she was a voice of hope, a spiritual guide, and a beloved member of our community," Bala added. Vakalisa is survived by her son. "Umhlobo Wenene FM extends its deepest condolences to Pastor Vakalisa's family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing her. "During this difficult time, we come together to honour her remarkable legacy and the immeasurable impact she had on all of us," said the statement.
