Thabo Mbeki says the 2008 xenophobic attacks were planned

Thabo Mbeki said the attacks were wrong

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki said that the gruesome 2008 xenophobic attacks in Alexandra, Gauteng, where many mercilessly died, were a planned strategy to force Zimbabweans to go back to their country so they could vote out Robert Mugabe.

ITS ALL IN AN INTELLIGENT REPORT

Mbeki made these shocking revelations during a conversation with students at the University of South Africa, in Pretoria, yesterday. "There is an intelligence report that I had access to as president at the time that names the people and the motives behind the attacks," he said. In March 2008, Zimbabwe held general elections and after Morgan Tsvangirai and Mugabe didn't succeed at getting a 50% majority, both candidates had to re-run in an election that was set for June.

MURDER FOR VOTES

In the same year, in May, suddenly there was blood shed in the congested streets of Alexandra township, where a wave of xenophobic attacks flared up, later spreading to other parts of the province. "There's intelligence report with names, dates and venues where people met and planned this and so on. It's presented as a xenophobic attack by the people of Alexandra; it was wrong; it was organised, systematic and for a political purpose. I'm seeing the mistake we made; we should've declassified that intelligence report." Mbeki said that although it is believed that foreign nationals are causing the financial crisis in the country, that's not the case. However, he said South African borders need to be controlled and restricted.
