Steve Kompela on players being good examples to the youth

Mamelodi Sundown coach Steve Kompela addresses GBV

For a long time, the issue of gender-based violence has been treated as a women's issue when in reality, it affects both men and women, equally. Breaking the silence on GBV and the silence among men is Mamelodi Sundown coach Steve Kompela who joined forces with football star Happy Jele, and Bernard Parker for the Carling Black Label #NoExcuse Campaign in speaking up against the GBV.

BROTHERHOOD

Steve said the issue starts with men being able to express their emotions. "Gone are the days where people believe that men don't cry,' he said. "Men do and should cry.' As a coach, he is plagued with the responsibility to build trust and brotherhood among his team players and redefine masculinity in a healthy, respectful, and non-violent manner.

DISCIPLINE

The senior coach addressed the issue of mentorship and personal, accountability in young men. How football is not separate from society. "There is a misconception that strength is about dominance, control, and never showing weakness,' he said. "But in reality, strength is about discipline, responsibility, and knowing how to manage emotions in a way that does not harm others.'

VIOLENCE

He believes that soccer players are not just athletes; but are men who come from the same communities that are also dealing with gender-based violence and mental health. 'If a player comes from an environment where violence is normalized, that behavior carries over into his relationships and everyday life,' he said. "But mentorship and proper guidance can break that cycle.' While many soccer players deal with issues of alcohol abuse, he stressed that as public figures, they need to recognize the immense influence they have over young boys who look up to them. "They need to be good examples. They can help shift attitudes and instill values that will reduce gender-based violence.'
