Residents believe municipal workers damage electrical cables to get overtime

Tshwane Mayor Dr.Nasiphi Moya concerned about the safety of municipal workers

Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya has expressed concern over an alleged life-threatening incident that municipal electricity workers narrowly escaped on Saturday. It is reported that frustrated residents from Soshanguve Block BB cornered and threatened municipal workers over an extended power outage.

SABOTAGE

Ward 94 councillor Elisha Mlotshwa said the incident occurred following suspicions by residents that some municipal workers might be involved in the damaging of electrical cables to be booked for overtime work. "People who are working overtime are known to be paid more than those working during the day,' Mlotshwa said. She added that earlier in the week, residents took to the streets, demanding that electricity be restored.

NARROW ESCAPE

Moya took to social media to express a sigh of relief regarding municipal workers narrowly escaping a confrontation with angry residents who demanded that their lights be restored. She said: "These city officials are doing the most. This team has just escaped an angry group of residents frustrated by a power outage in Soshanguve. When I spoke to them, they were on duty. We organised security so they could restore power. Soon, we will complete the upgrades at the IA substation, which has been neglected for years, so the people of Soshanguve can have reliable electricity.'
