R4.5 million funding which was given to crossover gospel festival last year has been pulled...

The gospel show will go on despite having no funding from government

They were expecting to host the second annual Mpumalanga Crossover Music Festival with A-list artists, such as Winnie Mashaba, Keke, Sipho Makhabane, and many others, with the support from the Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation, as they did last year. However, after back-to-back meetings and being sent from pillar to post, they were rejected.

HEARTFELT

The president of the Rising Sun Foundation, Smanga Singwane, has expressed his dismay at how the department abruptly pulled the plug at the last hour. "I take great pride in Mpumalanga Province and remain committed to ensuring that our local artists, particularly gospel musicians, receive the recognition and support they deserve," he said. "Over the years, our foundation has worked tirelessly to develop and nurture the talent of Mpumalanga artists from various municipalities, often without government assistance. We have invested millions in recording projects and festivals across the country, contributing to job creation for local artists," he added. "Last year, we spent significant funds on the Cross Over Music Festival, held at Mbombela Stadium, where 90% of the performers were local artists."

LACK OF COMMUNICATION

He told ZiMoja: "The departments say they do not have the budget; however, we think there could be some hidden agendas; we do not know. What we know for sure is that the people from Mpumalanga want this event as it keeps them very safe from New Year Day celebration accidents that happen around this time as they gather in one safe environment that is created by this event. Vendors and artists also benefit from this event." He added that despite presenting their case in a meeting with the department, they are yet to receive a response.

TO THE MINISTER

He has urged the Minister, Gayton McKenzie, to intervene urgently. "It is clear that our contribution to the arts industry is not being acknowledged by the Mpumalanga government," he said. "The return of the Cross Over Music Festival is something that many in our province have been eagerly awaiting. I want the public to be aware that I have consulted with various stakeholders in the arts sector before going public with this matter, so that local artists understand the situation. Without funding or support from the department, we are unable to fulfil their requests." The acting chief director from the department had not responded at the time of publishing.
