Two people lost their lives in an accident in Soweto involving the Johannesburg metro police officers who were attending to a shooting scene related to a taxi operators' protest. It's reported that the traffic cop's vehicle crashed into another car at the shooting scene earlier today. Taxi operators have brought Soweto to a standstill by blocking roads using their taxis. The demonstrations follow ongoing disputes by taxi associations fighting over routes for over 10 years.
THE ACCIDENT
Fihla confirmed that a fatal accident was reported at one of the locations where there are demonstrations. "A fatal accident has also been reported in the same area, involving five individuals. This includes two JMPD officers; one sustained serious injuries, and one fatality has been reported, and two other individuals sustained injuries. Another passenger unfortunately died on their arrival at the hospital." Fihl recommended that motorists travelling to and from Soweto use alternative routes like Chris Hani Road, Soweto Highway, and Moroka Nancefield Road.
ROUTES TO AVOID
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla warned motorists of serious traffic disruptions in Orlando West and Mofolo Central because of the protest. Fihla said there are some routes that motorists should avoid and urged them to be careful while driving around the township. "In Mofolo Central, Machaba Drive is blocked near Elias Motsoaledi Road; expect substantial delays. In Orlando West, the intersection of Klipspruit Valley Road, Khumalo Road, and Sofasonke Street is blocked. Traffic diversions are causing delays on Xorile Street and Martha Louw Street, said Fihla. He explained that JMPD officers are present at both locations, advising motorists to exercise extreme caution and possibly avoid the affected areas," he said.
