NPA apologises to Sonia Mbele

Sonia Mbele was mentoned in a media statement about her son Donell's rapecase

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has found itself in trouble with businesswoman and former Generations actress Sonia Mbele after it released a media statement about her son's court appearance. It's understood that Mbele took offence to the statement as she had nothing to do with her son's case. The statement was headlined, "Renowned actress' son appears in court for allegedly raping his girlfriend."

THE HARMFUL MEDIA STATEMENT

Mbele's son Donelle (23) appeared before the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday accused of raping his girlfriend in December. The opening of the media statement said, "Donell Mbele (23), the son of a renowned actress, appeared before the Randburg Magistrate's Court on two charges of rape. The charges emanate from a complaint registered with Sandton South African Police Service (SAPS) by his 17-year-old girlfriend, who alleges that Mbele raped her on 14 and 15 December 2024 at his place of residence in Morningside. She explained that the two of them were out on a date at Clearwater Mall on the 14th." The NPA retracted the statement late last night and said how it was crafted does not align with their high standards of professionalism and integrity.

APOLOGY

ZiMoja understands that Mbele threatened to take legal action for her name being mentioned in the initial press statement on the day her son appeared in court on Tuesday. Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA Gauteng Regional spokesperson, said the statement reflected poor judgement that was unfortunately allowed to slip through the standard quality control measures to which the NPA subjects their media statements. "We sincerely and unreservedly apologise for any harm or distress caused, particularly to the mother indirectly referred to in the statement and to all members of the public in general. As the NPA, we remain committed to upholding public trust and ensuring that our communication reflects the highest ethical and professional standards." Mbele refused to comment on the matter.
