The Speaker of the Moses Kotane Local Municipality, Gugulethu Mtshali, has finally tendered her resignation after the ANC in the North West instructed her to step down. This follows an incident where she was forcibly removed from the council chamber by security personnel last month after refusing to resign following her removal from office.
A GONE GIRL
Regional secretary Raymond Moraile confirmed that Mtshali was given 48 hours to step down from two weeks ago when she allegedly tore up the council's agenda document during a postponed council sitting. He said Mtshali's behaviour put the municipality and the ANC in a shameful position. "The decorum of the house was not respected by her behaviour. She was asked by the organisation to issue an apology to the residents of Moses Kotane Municipality for her behaviour, but no apology was made. We told her to resign within 48 hours," Moraile said.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Mtshali wrote a letter to the provincial secretary Louis Diremelo informing him of her resignation on Friday. In the letter, Mtshali urged the PEC to hold the entire Moses Kotane ANC caucus accountable for the state of affairs in the council and the council meeting on 21 October that was abruptly postponed. ANC Bojanala regional spokesperson Thabo Molamu said: "On a number of occasions, this municipality has found itself dominating media headlines for all the wrong reasons. These include employing on a permanent basis a VBS accused who is out on bail, accusations of reserving jobs for only the politically connected persons and for struggling to deliver on service delivery."
