The National Prosecuting Authority says more arrests are looming in the case of 43-year-old Limpopo police Sergeant Rachel Kutumela charged with insurance claim-related murders. Today, the police sergeant's sister Anna and daughter Flora Shokane made their first appearance in Polokwane Magistrate's Court facing charges relating to receiving unlawful proceeds and money laundering.
MORE ARRESTS COMING
The NPA Limpopo spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said they cannot rule out the possibility of more arrests in this matter. "More arrests are expected, so at any time we can have other people arrested. The main accused and her daughter are facing additional charges of money laundering," Dzhangi said. She emphasised that the state has a very strong case against the three accused persons. The trio's case was postponed to 30 October for formal bail application. She said the reason for the three different days for bail application is to give the accused time to place their case on record. Dzhangi added that the suspects have been remanded in custody and the state will oppose their bail application.
CHARGES
Kutumela and her co-accused are facing multiple counts related to insurance claim-related murders, money laundering and obstruction of justice. The sergeant allegedly fraudulently benefited from funeral, accidental and life policy covers from various banks and insurance companies. According to investigations, she started her killing spree in 2019. Her victims were known to her and were from destitute and disadvantaged backgrounds and some were disabled or mentally challenged. She would take out life policy and funeral covers on their behalf and she would be the beneficiary. She is currently linked to about six insurance-related murders and evidence shows she has pocketed at least R10 million.
