It does not rain but it pours for Shauwn "MaMkhize" Mkhize since her non-payment of tax is haunting her. This is as her Betway Premiership team, Royal AM FC, continues to have their soccer games postponed unabated.
ROYAL LOSS
Royal AM was supposed to play a league match against Soweto giants Orlando Pirates at Harry Gwala Stadium on Thursday night in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal. However, the Premier Soccer League released a statement today to announce the cancellation of the match. Not only is the match against Pirates being cancelled, but the league has also postponed their Nedbank Cup game against KZN opponents, Milford FC, which was scheduled for this weekend. Royal AM, whose chairman Andile Mpisane plays for, did not honour their league match against Chippa United on January 11, set to be played in Port Elizabeth.
MATCHES POSTPONED INDEFINITELY
In a statement, the PSL said: "On 9 January 2025, Royal AM FC informed the League that it could not meet its commitments in respect of its match against Chippa United FC on 11 January 2025 due to difficulties arising from the appointment of a curator. The Executive Committee (ExCo) has since convened three separate meetings seeking the assurance that the club, under curatorship, will be able to meet its fixture commitments in a compliant fashion." The League said on 17 January that their ExCo was informed that a joint letter of comfort from club management and the curator would be provided confirming that the issues that led to the club being unable to meet its commitments had been resolved. "No such letter of comfort has been forthcoming, and ExCo has been left with no alternative but to cancel PSL Fixture 106-Royal AM vs. Orlando Pirates and to suspend all other Royal AM fixtures until further notice," the statement said. The league added that the club will still be afforded a chance to make representations regarding the matter.
OWING A STAGGERING AMOUNT
Royal AM had been promoting their now postponed match against Pirates on their Facebook page. On Monday, they urged supporters to buy their tickets. On Tuesday, they showed photos of their players hard at training. The cancellation of matches is affecting PSL sponsors like Betway and SuperSport, who are broadcast sponsors, and Nedbank, amongst others. Orlando Pirates has also updated their fans about the latest developments. They wrote on their Facebook page: "Our fixture originally scheduled for 23 January 2025 against Royal AM has been cancelled." Royal AM owes SARS R40 million in unpaid taxes. The team's bank account was frozen in November 2024, and their movable assets and expensive cars belonging to Mkhize's companies and herself were confiscated by SARS officials. The team legally belongs to SARS, under a curator. In December, the players and officials of the team did not get their salaries. The players boycotted training until last week when the team said they had paid the players.
