Jacob Zuma says he cannot figure out the case levelled against his daughter

Former President Jacob Zuma addresses supporters and the media outside court

MK Party leader and Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla's father, Jacob Zuma, spoke outside the Durban Magistrate's Court, expressing confusion over the charges against his daughter. He said they cannot figure out what case is levelled against Duduzile, who was released on warning. In court, the state said it has prima facie evidence to prove that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla incited violence during the 2021 July unrest.

WHY ARE WE HERE?

Zuma addressed the media and supporters outside the court, saying that they came to court for nothing. "When are we going to finally defend our freedom" Zuma reflected on his past as a freedom fighter who was arrested by his enemies. He expressed concerns over today's judiciary. "I was arrested by enemies and convicted for 10 years and 6 months. I was willing to die for this country and became a soldier ready to die for our people. I was never arrested for having done nothing but I was arrested because I was fighting for freedom; fortunately for me, I survived and lived. Many of the comrades we were in the struggle with died at the time. When I was in Robben Island, I had no problem because I knew what I was being sacrificed for.' He emphasised that he was never arrested in vain by the Boers during the apartheid struggle. "I knew what I had done and why I was being arrested. Now in our democratic government, in our freedom, we were woken up and ordered to come to court today for nothing over my daughter. We have just been in court, but we cannot figure out what case is levelled against Duduzile," said Zuma.

NOT HERE FOR POLITICS

Sambudla-Zuma's twin brother, Duduzani Zuma, said he came to court to support his sister and is not interested in the politics surrounding the matter. "I'm here to support my sister. She's family, and at the end of the day, that comes first, politics aside. The court will process what they need to do and say what they need to say. Whatever verdict comes out, we will wait for the court. I've been in this situation as well as my father and it's awful, but we are hopeful that this is a credible case and they've got their story right.'
