They once gave South Africa the biggest dance song for the 2020 festive season. Their overnight success after a video of "stoko' outside a petrol station changed their lives forever, as their music career shot to the roof. John Vuli Gate makers, Mapara A Jazz, made up of Mano Nephawe and Leornard Malatji, has since faded and they are struggling to make ends meet and secure bookings.

EASY COME…

After a successful run in the music business for about four years, Mapara A Jazz has struggled to secure bookings and to make a living from their music. Previously signed to the struggling Open Mic Productions, the duo has left the high life in Midrand Johannesburg and relocated back home to Phelindaba in North West. "Times are tough for the gents,' a source revealed to ZiMoja. "They get bookings here and there from friends who know them from John Vuli Gate days. But things have changed. They were not irresponsible with their moneybut their star just faded. The music industry has a shelf life when you are not relevant, but it doesn't mean you are not talented, they had their time and maybe they will come back. Who knows? but also the rise was instant and quick, you know what they say about easy come...' the friend said.

NOT EASY

The two are said to be still working with Open Mic Productions. "But it's complicated. There are not many artists at Open Mic since Makhadzi, Master KG, AirBurn Sounds and many others have left. The music industry has changed and people are taking the more independent route.' When asked about their group, Mano told ZiMoja they were doing okay. "Moving back home doesn't make you a failure. We are still performing here and there - yes things are not the same but we are pushing and still doing what we love. It's not easy, but we are fighters.'
