CRIME WATCH: Seven arrested with stolen platinum worth R350m

Seven suspects were arrested for being in possesion of stolen platinum material worth millions

NORTH WEST: The Hawks in North West, in collaboration with KwaZulu-Natal Hawks and various law enforcement units, arrested seven suspects in Rustenburg and Brits today for alleged illegal dealing in precious metals, illegal possession of precious metals and theft of precious metals. Their arrest follows information received about theft of suspected platinum group material at a mine in Rustenburg. The suspects, aged between 34 and 67, allegedly stole the platinum estimated at R350 million and kept it in Rustenburg and Brits for sale. The team raided both premises this morning and pounced on the suspects. The suspects will appear in the Brits and Rustenburg Magistrates Court tomorrow.

 

KWAZULU-NATAL: A multidisciplinary team in the uMzinyathi District made a major breakthrough when they arrested a suspect who was wanted for the triple murder, which he allegedly committed at KwaNqulu in the Nquthu policing precinct in KwaZulu-Natal in October 2023. The suspect was traced and cornered at Msinga, where he was arrested and found in possession of a rifle, which is believed to be the weapon that was used in the commission of the murders. When the police were on their way to detain the arrested suspect, another person was spotted with a firearm at the local taxi tank and when the police approached him, he started firing shots, injuring one police officer on the arm. Police returned fire and the man was shot dead. 

 

LIMPOPO: Members of the Limpopo anti-smuggling task team have arrested a 44-year-old male suspect for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle on Monday in Musina. According to SAPS spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba, police received information about a suspicious white SUVthat was travelling from Gauteng province to Musina. They stopped the car just outside Polokwane and enquired with the driver about its originality, only to discover that the car was reported stolen last week Wednesday at Wieredabrug in Pretoria, Gauteng. Preliminary investigations revealed that the motor vehicle was intended to be smuggled into Zimbabwe via Beitbridge border post. The suspect will appear before Polokwane Magistrate Court soon, facing a charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

 

EASTERN CAPE: SAPS have launched a manhunt for suspects who killed one foreign national and injured another at Cofimvaba. The police were alerted by the members of the public about an incident at R61, near Magwala Location, where they found the body of a 37-year-old male while the 22-year-old victim had visible injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Upon investigation, police discovered that the two victims were kidnapped on 29 July. No arrest has been made. A case of murder and attempted murder are opened for investigation. Police are appealing to anyone who can assist with information that can lead to the arrest of those responsible for the incident to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
