Eighteen lives lost in N3 horror accident

Eighteen people have died in accident involving a truck and taxi on the N3

A tragic collision involving a truck and a taxi on the Van Reenen Pass along the N3 has resulted in the loss of 18 lives. According to reports, the incident occurred between 8:30 and 9:00 pm last night.

CONDOLENCES

Siboniso Duma, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, expressed his deep concern regarding the ongoing fatalities caused by road accidents and extended his heartfelt condolences. "We extend our sincerest sympathies to the families affected by this tragedy. I have requested a detailed report from our committed Road Traffic Inspectorate team. Since last night, we have observed a rise in road accidents along the N3, N2, and other routes due to heavy rainfall," stated Duma.

WEATHER A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR

Duma said that they have received reports of heavy rainfall in low-lying areas, which will result in possible flooding of houses. He explained that he interacted with heads of both departments of Transport and Human Settlements, and they have plans in place to ensure they respond to emergency incidents with a high sense of urgency. "For transport, a highly dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate working with municipalities is monitoring the flow of traffic across all major routes to ensure the safety of motorists. Since the 1st of January, more than 10 people have died on our roads. With the rain, the roads are slippery. We are requesting motorists to be extra careful." He added, "Working with a team from the National Department of Human Settlements, we are currently intervening in municipalities where heavy rainfall and strong winds destroyed houses. About eight temporary residential units are being procured to assist families whose houses were destroyed in Nkandla. Four other families will receive building materials," concluded Duma.
