Diarrhea outbreak in Mpumalanga kills toddler

A diarrhea outbreak has hit Mpumalanga

A nine month toddler has reportedly died following a diarrhoea outbreak in Barberton Mpumalanga. The Mpumalanga Department of Health has warned residents in the to remain cautious amid the outbreak.

The department has confirmed and recorded 73 diarrhoea cases thus far with one death of a nine-month-old baby who died at the Barberton Hospital.

?So far 18 individuals have since been admitted to the hospital for diarrhoea. Amid the diarrhoea outbreak scare within the uMjindi area, the department has deployed an outbreak response team to investigate the source of infection and also to try and contain the spread,? said the department in a statement.


PRACTICE HYGIENE 


Residents are advised to boil water before drinking them and also to wash food and hands thoroughly. They must visit the clinic if they have diarrhoea that doesn?t improve within two days, pass stool that?s bloody or black, urinate very little or have a very dry mouth and skin, develop a fever over 38.9 °C or experience abdominal or rectal pain. Avoiding dehydration is very important, especially in children and older adults. Currently the department is awaiting results from samples taken from six water sources.
