It was a proud moment for Chief Justice Raymond Mnyanezeli Zondo as his daughter, Ziphozenkosi Zondo, was admitted as an attorney at the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday by KwaZulu-Natal Judge President Thoba Poyo-Dlwati.

A PROUD FATHER

The chief justice has four children, one being the South African popular cricket player, Khaya Zondo. Ziphozenkosi was admitted with one of 11 other young legal practitioners. Zondo said it was a proud moment for him and his family to see his daughter follow in his footsteps. "I am honoured that she would choose the same profession as mine. I always advise my children to follow their dreams, and this is her dream, and there was no pressure. She initially wanted to study drama, but her friends told her she would make a great lawyer. We are proud of her and support her,' he said.

STEPPING DOWN

Zondo is chancellor of the University of Zululand and has been chief justice since 2022 after acting in the position from 11 October 2021, when Mogoeng Mogoeng retired. As of September, he will be handing over the reins to Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya, who will be the first woman in South Africa to hold that position.
