Snow is expected in the Eastern Cape from today

Whilst provinces such as the Northern Cape, eastern parts of North West, the Free State, Gauteng and Limpopo have been battling a heatwave with extremely high fire danger this past weekend, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) is warning of disruptive snow in the Eastern Cape from today.

VERY COLD

SAWS reported that snowfalls are expected over the high-lying areas. "This is due to a high-pressure system ridging from far south of the country, with a southerly to south easterly wind, resulting in cold to very cold and wet conditions over the Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi district municipalities as well as over the Beyers Naude, Blue Crain Route, Matatiele, Uzimvubu and Raymond Mhlaba local municipalities," said SAWS.

HEAVY RAIN

Meanwhile, SAWS said most parts of KwaZulu-Natal should expect widespread showers and thunderstorms today. "Rains will be scattered to isolated in the north except the extreme north-eastern parts of KZN and may be accompanied by strong damaging winds, excessive lightning, large hail, and heavy downpours. This is expected to impact major roads due to falling trees, impact electricity due to possible power surges as well as be a danger to human life and livestock due to excessive flooding," SAWS warned.
