CRIMEWATCH: Former Eskom employee to be extradited back into the country

Alleged Eskom fraudster Michael Lomas will land in the country today

GAUTENG: A fugitive that has been wanted by the police in connection with fraud and corruption at Eskom is being extradited back into the country. Michael Lomas will arrive at OR Tambo International Airport this morning at 9am. Lomas faces allegations of fraud and corruption at Eskom amounting to almost R1.5 billion and was arrested in London in 2021. His extradition order was granted in August 2024. "Lomas will arrive in SA accompanied by SAPS Interpol SA and will be handed over to the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (known as the Hawks). He is an ex-Eskom employee and is wanted in connection with the alleged fraud and corruption that took place between 2008 and 2018 at Kusile Power station," said SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, adding that he allegedly manipulated contracts and was previously arrested and when he got bail, he fled the country to the United Kingdom.

 

WESTERN CAPE: The Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in Oudtshoorn has launched a manhunt for four men linked to a case of rape and robbery of a 32-year-old man. The incident took place on 5 September at about 3.45pm near Rosebank, Bongulethu in Oudtshoorn. Western Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Christopher Spies, said the victim was on his way home when one of the attackers approached him at a bridge. "The man dragged the victim under the bridge, where three others joined in. The victim was raped and robbed of his personal belongings. The search for the suspects continues, and identikits have been released. The police are urging anyone with information to contact Sergeant Corne Thysse at 044 203 7513."

 

LIMPOPO: A 17-year-old suspect was arrested on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, after he allegedly raped a six-year-old girl at Nwa-Marhanga village under Giyani in February 2023. It is reported that on that fateful day, the complainant left her child at home and went to the sports field. "According to information, the victim informed her that a known suspect arrived at home and forcefully took her (the child) to the toilet, where he raped her and thereafter fled the scene. The incident was only reported to the police on Monday, 16 September 2024, and a case of rape was registered. On Wednesday, 18 September 2024, the suspect's parents handed him to the police. He was then placed under arrest, "said SAPS spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba. He said since the suspect is underage, he was released the same day under parental supervision. "The probation officer was engaged and is expected to compile an assessment report pertaining to the suspect with regards to the court proceedings soon."
