ANCYL calls for Ramaphosa to address food poisoning issue

ANC Youth League's Collen Malatjie calls for President Cyril Ramaphosa's intervention amid food poisoning crisis

The ANC Youth League has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to not turn a blind eye and urgently address the nation on issues of food safety that have been troubling the country.

SOUTH AFRICAN SPAZAS

ANC Youth League President Collen Malatiie said all the illegal foreigners who occupy tuck shops in South Africa must leave. "All the tuck shops in our townships must be operated and registered, and they must be run mainly by the youth of this country. It's only in South Africa where somebody can come into the country illegally, open a tuck shop, sell expired and fake products and poison the kids of the country, and there's no action, said Malatjie.

RAMAPHOSA SAY SOMETHING

He said Ramaphosa must urgently address the nation on this burning issue. "He must call the country and address them, give them confidence about what is happening and give a full report. Thereafter, out of that report, we will decide whether there must be a state of emergency or not. We are putting pressure on the president and so is the ANC, but soon he has to say something," he said. He added, "As more incidents are being reported, pressure has to be elevated on the government side for a state of emergency to be declared following the deaths of several children from suspected food poisoning." Many communities have taken matters into their own hands shutting down the foreign-owned spaza shops believed to be selling poisonous food. Meanwhile, the Gauteng provincial government has announced an intervention plan, including the re-registration of spaza shops.
