Identity of man accused of killing a pregnant sex worker revealed

The man accused of killing a sex worker and hid her body appeared in court today

Sifiso Mkhwanazi's identity has been revealed. The  20-year-old is accused of raping and killing a pregnant sex worker. Five more bodies were discovered in clients' cars at his father's makeshift workshop near Faraday Taxi Rank. However the court is awaiting DNA results to determine if he was linked to the other murders. The state said in the last appearance they  requested the accused to be held in the Johannesburg cells for the purposes of an ID parade. According to the State prosecutor Tshepo Mhange kaMzizi the parade was successful and the state is ready to proceed with other investigations.

FORCING THE SUSPECT TO CONFESS

The court will take into account that the five bodies were found further than the one the accused is being linked with. Investigations are ongoing and we will not disclose the findings of the DNA results and identity of the rest of the bodies until everything is completed. The defence Khanyiswa Mkhabe put it to the court that her client was not happy when his father attempted to visit him. This is because his father came to see him with an investigating officer and they both coerced him into confessing. "The accused is not happy about this. The magistrate said the accused has a right to decline if he does not want any visitors but he cannot be prevented from getting any. It's his constitutional right to have visitors, if he is not happy to have visitors he needs to notify correctional services. You might as well write to the prison and inform them of this. Nobody is compelled to force the accused to confess, not even his family, and they need to be made aware of this.
We can't obtain irregular confessions which will later take us back, should we have to proceed,"she said.

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY

She said the Investigating officers shouldn't force the accused but wait for him to willingly give his side of the story. "He has his rights because he is innocent until proven guilty and the state has an obligation that it properly investigates this matter to the fullest. The case has to proven beyond reasonable doubt and the right processes need to be followed." There's lots of investigations that are still outstanding. Amongst them is the DNA results that were collected from family members that will help in identifying the deceased. As we have indicated that some of the information from the evidence will be used during bail application and most of the evidential material will be used on the trial."

THE DEVIL'S WORK

One of abacimbizi said it was unfortunate that she couldn't get into court because she wanted to see the accused. "I am scared and ever since my colleagues started missing. I went back to KZN. I only came back on the 10th of October and things are not good for me financially." She started working on the streets in 2010 and her entire family is dependent on her.
"I go to work occasionally because rumour has it that this boy was not the only one doing the devils work but his father as well" she said.
