One suspect has been shot dead and two arrested after ten family members were killed at their home in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal in the early hours of Friday morning.
MASSACRE
The incident took place in Imbali township, Unit 14 where the Memela family members were shot dead. Police Minister Bheki Cele and SAPS top management together with Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola visited the crime scene on Friday morning. "According to initial police reports, unknown gunmen stormed into a Pietermaritzburg homestead and ambushed the family, seven women and three men were fatally wounded during the shooting," Themba said. Its alleged that the gun men entered the Memela family pretending to be police before shooting seven women and three men.
FIVE SURVIVES THE SHOOTING
The young members of the Memela fdaily survived the shooting. Lethuse Mbhele (4), Siyabonga Memela (5), Ayanda Manunu Memela (8), Ndlovu, (22) and Philani Memela survived the attack. The ten victims were identifies as Phumlani Memela (28), Nompilo Mthembu Mthiyane, (21), Andiswa Ngcobo (15), Brenda Memela, 38, Fikile Hlabisa (53), Nomfundo Memela (20), Beatrice Memela (63), Sabelo Mhlonyana,(15) and 17-year-old Siphesihle Memela.
POLICE CONFIRM
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Kay Naicker said: "We can confirm that while cops were attending a scene in Imbali where 10 people were brutally shot and killed, they received information of possible suspects in a house where they were undergoing a cleansing in a house few hours away from the scene,' Naicker said. He added that as the police approached the house, the suspects opened fire and there was gun exchange. "A shootout ensued and one suspect was fatally shot, one was injured and the third was arrested. The police confiscated three firearms and there will be taking the guns for forensic ballistic testing," said Naicker.
ANOTHER SHOOTING IN KZN?
In another shooting in KZN, the police said four men stormed KwaMashu Hostel in the north of Durban on Thursday and shot and killed four people inside a house. It is alleged the gunmen entered the house and shot at the occupants. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda says, the suspects used the vehicle of one of the deceased as a getaway vehicle. "When we arrived, we found that four men were shot and killed inside the house. They were in one room. Two are brothers, one is a neighbour and one is a friend who was visiting from Phoenix. The reports we are getting is that an unknown number of suspects, believed to be between three and four came to the house and opened fire, killing all four instantly. They came on foot but left with a vehicle that belonged to one of the deceased, the one who had visited.' Netshiunda said. The police are still searching foe the suspects.
