Ten killed, six missing as flash floods hit KZN, Mpumalanga and Gauteng

Flash floods and heavy rains have affected most parts of the country

At least ten people have died, six other are missing while hundreds have been displaced following heavy rains and flash floods in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga over the weekend. Mpulanga has been hard hit by the territorial rains.

 

KWAZULU-NATAL 

 

In KwaZulu Natal two people, Nokubonga Mchunu(22) and Thulani  Mabaso (52) lost their lives when they were swept away while trying to cross a large body of water in Danhausser in KwaZulu Natal (KZN). An infant died when their home was flooded over the weekend. In the Mkhanyakude District, two people are still missing after they were swept away trying to cross a flooded river in Ngwavuma. A police van was swept away in Madlangeni and the officers were rescued. 

MEC for Cooperative Governance and  Traditional Affairs in KZN Bongi Sithole-Moloi said that the Zululand, Mkhanyakude, King Cetshwayo and Amajuba districts were badly affected.

GAUTENG

 

Tshwane EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso confirmed to ZiMoja that five people were swept away during heavy rain on Monday morning. "We did receive information that about five people  have been swept away in a stream in Olievenhoutbosch on Monday morning,' he said Mabaso. The first casualty was on Thursday when officers responded to a call on Thursday, about a man being swept away by the Apies River near the Pretoria Zoological Gardens at about 1.30pm. 

 

Giving an update on flooding incidents in the city, Mabaso said there had not been a significant number of households reported flooded."This morning a house in Pretoria West reported that water came into the house at about ankle level. Flooding of Rooihuiskraal Road and Roger Dyason Road in Pretoria West was reported. One vehicle was stuck in water in Roger Dyason. The occupants evacuated safely.'

 

MPUMALANGA 

 

The Mpumalanga department of co-operative governance and traditional affairs said on Monday that two people were confirmed dead and that four others are still missing following floods in the province. The two people were swept away at the Mluti River in the Nkomazi Local Municipality. In a statement, the municipality said: "The community of Nkomazi is requested to always be vigilant of low-level bridges, rivers, streams, and dams as it continues to rain. Due to the heavy downpours, rivers and streams are dangerous to cross. Do not attempt to travel across flooded bridge. Fast moving water may result in injury or death,' The provincial department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs said they will continue assessing flood damages. MOPPING UP

 

In KZN, MEC Sithole-Moloi led the mop operation on Monday in Newcastle. Moloi Sithole further said that there are houses that were destroyed and the government were able to provide temporary shelter to those displaced.Bongi Sithole Moloi, led mop-up operations in Newcastle, under the Amajuba District, where two people and an infant lost their lives. The MEC also visited the families of the deceased to provide interim relief. " Together with the political leadership of the Amajuba District and senior officials from the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, we conducted an inspection of the flood damaged areas in the Newcastle CBD, which had large parts flooded during the heavy rains. We continue to appeal to residents to exercise the utmost caution as the inclement weather conditions could continue," Sithole-Moloi said
