Nathi takes the fight to the forces of darkness

Nathi MaNkayi takes on the fight through music

At a time of great tests and challenges, Nathi Mankayi has released a new anthem of hope and spiritual fortification titled Imimoya. The powerful and moving song reminds listeners that the fights on earth are not only physical, but spiritual too. In Imimoya, Mankayi reflects on how schemers, naysayers and detractors stood in his way to greatness with their devious plans.

LOSING HIS PARENTS TO COVID-19

He himself has faced legal woes and challenges from his previous recording company over money. He admits that Usiba Lwe Gazi, the album from which Imimoya emerges is his most personal. He hasn't lost the edge and charm he displayed on his debut album Nomvula. The crooner and Xhosa singer connects beautifully with the music and in turn, his fans.
Usiba Lwe Gazi, written and recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic in the dining room of producer Surprise Nzimande and the title literally means a feather of blood. The title comes from the idea of using a feather as a pen to write letters. It is also Nathi's first creative expression following the death of his parents who both perished due to Covid-19.

WRITTEN FROM THE HEART

The 12-track album boasts songs full of love, hope and renewal following devastation and pain. He reunited with Tee Tee, his former protégé on two love songs, Angeke and Sondela My Love, and they created a melodious harmony. Other standout tracks are the playful Skipa se Adidas, Matewu, Msamariya, Number 1 and Andidlali Ngawe. He also worked with young producers Lesedi Molefe (Big Les for Real) and Batundi in crafting a modern approach that will appeal to younger fans.
Not one to get stuck in one sound, Nathi insists that this album defies any category or genre as it's music written from the heart. In some places it sounds like R&B and soul, the next it is Afro-pop with some Amapiano and then takes a turn to the gospel side of things. He let the emotions run and allowed creativity to express itself freely without boxing the work.
He still wants to record young musicians through his company Mankayi Media and believes that there is always new talent that needs a hand up. He continues to draw and paint in addition to singing and producing.
