Despite a dark cloud hanging over him with the Farmgate scandal, Cyril Ramaphosa has retained his position and has been re-elected as the President of the African National Congress (ANC). The party officially announced the results of its top 7 leadership this morning at the Nasrec Expo Centre. There was speculation that with the Phala Phala saga, things were not looking good for him but he clearly has thick skin as a buffalo and will remain for the second term, beating hopeful Zweli Mkhize.
WORKING OVERNIGHT TO COUNT VOTES
The ruling party's head of elections Kgalema Motlhanthe revealed the results of those who will leading the party for the next five years. Ramaphosa beat his hopeful counterpart Zweli Mkhize with 2476 votes. Delegates voted for the new leadership yesterday and the electoral team worked over night to count the votes, which were revealed this morning.The new leadership will lead the ANC into the general elections in 2024.
TWO DELEGATES CAUGHT TAKING PICS WHILE CASTING THEIR VOTES
Paul Mashatile proved victorious as ANC deputy president, beating Eastern Cape Premier and Provincial Chair Oscar Mabuyane and NEC member and Justice Minister Ronald Lamola. The newly elected Treasurer General is Gwen Ramokgopa. The Secretary General position belongs to Comrade Fikile Mbalula and the first Deputy Secretary General position was taken by Comrade Nomvula Mokonyane and the Second Deputy Secretary General position was taken by Comrade Maropene Ramokgopa 42-years, who is the youngest member of the ANC top 7. Gwede Mantashe retained his position as the National Chairperson. Delegates voted late into the night for the party's top seven with Gauteng Province delegates being the last to cast their vote. Once the voting process was completed the ballots were counted manually. Kgalema Mothlanthe explained that 4436 delegates were eligible to cast their vote. He said said 4386 votes were cast and 4384 ballots were counted, he claimed two ballots had to be disqualified after delegates were caught taking photos after casting their votes.
