Madosini passes on at 79

Madosini was awarded an honourary degree from Rhodes University by the University of Cape Town (UCT) for her contribution to music.

It has been a sombre Christmas eve as death strikes again in the South African music industry. While everyone was processing the news of the death of Kwaito singer Mandla Mampintsha Maphumulo who lost his life after suffering a brief stroke. The family of isiXhosa singer Dr. Latozi Madosini Mpahleni at age 79 years old.

 

FALLING ILL

Madosini's family confirmed the news after a long-term illness. "Dr. Latozi MadosiniMpahleni passed on, on December 23, 2022, at St Mary's Hospital in Mthatha after a relatively long illness. Having survived a heart attack whilst she was on a tour in France in 2019, as well as two Covid 19 attacks, her health status could not be back to its normalcy, and as a result from time to time she was admitted to hospital. Her last admission was at St Mary's Hospital on the 3 December 2022 where she subsequently succumbed at 16:15,"The statement reads.

 

MADOSINI'S LEGACY

Not long ago, Madosini was awarded an honourary degree from Rhodes University by the University of Cape Town (UCT) for her contribution to music. The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) also confirmed the sad news and shared messages of condolences. "Samro is saddened by the passing of Dr. LatoziMadosini Mpahleni, one of the last practicing music guardians of traditional Xhosa culture. She was unsurpassed in the making & playing of the Uhadi, Umrhubhe & Isitolotolo. Condolences to her family, friends and industry colleagues."
