The Eskom CEO Andr? de Ruyter is ending the year with a bang after resigning. With less than three years in his position De Ruyter had previously threatened to resign. This move follows Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe's attack on Eskom in the previous week.
ATTEMPT TO OVERTHROW GOVERNMENT
Mantashe claimed that the power utility was attempting to overthrow the government by failing to end load shedding, which was implemented over 15 years ago.In recent weeks the power utility has been struggling to provide sufficient power to residents with increased levels of loadshedding. The country is currently experiencing Stage 5 loadshedding, with some analysts expressing concern that the country could soon experience Stage 8 load shedding.
A SACRIFICIAL LAMB
DA Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises Ghaleb Cachalia said, "Andr? de Ruyter's apparent sudden resignation as the CEO of Eskom is a reflection on Gwede Mantashe's relentless campaign against a man who despite having one hand tied behind his back as he battled to get the utility on track fighting corruption, debilitating policies and political interference ,conducted a dutiful and responsible effort at the discharging of his duties." Cachalia said once again again the factional shenanigans of the ANC are spilling over into the efficient running of key utilities. "The results will be more than dire. At a time when de Ruyter needed all the support he could muster and a free hand to deal with the most pressing challenge facing the country, he has been sacrificed at the altar of political expediency, factionalism and racism."
