Class, exclusivity, stylish, and elegance are what guests experienced at this year's GQ Men Of The Year Awards held at The Leonardo Hotel in Sandton, recently. Hosted by Unathi Nkayi and Donovan Goliath, the event saw the likes of Lebo M, Theo Baloyi, and many other stars in their Sunday best.
WINNING BIG
Last year, veteran musician Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse was honoured with the Hennessy Lifetime Achievement Award. This year, Veteran actress Connie Chiume was the first woman to also receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. She looked back at the 45 years of ups and downs and says she's grateful to be recognised while still alive. "Being in this industry means that you have chosen to be a freelancer for the rest of your life and there will be beautiful moments, highs and lows,' she says. "I am normally asked how I did it. To be honest, I don't have an answer. I don't know how I did it and how I am still doing it. I think the passion and the love for the arts and the way one has been wired. We can't run away from it. We continue to want to learn, tell our South African stories, and want to educate and entertain. It's in our heart, our veins, in our arteries, we can't run from it.' Connie thanked her children who help to build the brand and handle her social media and those who supported her career. Sello Maake KA Ncube received the Industry Icon of the Year. "I am mad that you guys framed this category of the awards as an industry icon. I have been in it for forty years, five years as an amateur and 1981 as a professional. And everyone who has ever supported me, I say, thank you.' Sello thanked his wife of one year for her support. "I am just praying that God gives me another 20 years so that I can walk her to the SASSA line,' he jokes.
