Tragedy struck at the Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital as an infant was discovered by a porter at the toilets.The 1045g male infant was discovered at 04h15 in the female toilet bin with the placenta still attached.It is alleged that the porter who found the infant was escorting a patient when she made the gruesome discovery. "The staff members removed the baby from the dustbin and handed him over to labour ward and a D28 form was completed," said the hospital's spokesperson Noziphiwo Mjada.
MOTHER CANNOT BE TRACED
Jabulani Police were called and they completed the necessary paperwork. Mjada said the infant has been kept at the hospital mortuary awaiting to be collected by Forensic Pathology Services."The mother of the infant is unknown to the hospital. CCTV footage could not trace or show how the infant was dumped in the toilet bin or how the incident could have happened."

DIRE SITUATION
"The hospital can confirm that the baby was not born in our facility. The hospital would like to make a plea to the public to desist from abandoning babies, mental healthcare users and/or the elderly at the hospital," said Mjada.The public is urged to make use of the facilities that offer safe termination and adoption services around the province. She said that social workers within the hospital are also available to offer assistance to pregnant women who might find themselves in dire situations and need advice on alternative options.
