‘I want to be known as an artist and not just an actress' - Nomvelo Makhanya on leaving Scandal! after 10 years

Nomvelo has left the Scandal building

She joined Scandal! as Lindiwe, a young high school living at the Ngema home in Soweto. She has since grown into a powerhouse and her character developed into a nightclub owner and married Nhlamulo, played by Mathews Rantsoma. Lindiwe has faced many trials and tribulations.   After 10 years on Scandal! Nomvelo leaves and her last show aired yesterday. "My time at Scandal! has been nothing short of amazing,' Nomvelo tells Zimoja.

THE EMOTIONAL EXIT

Her last appearance was tear-jerking as she took her last breath after being diagnosed with a chronic illness. She tells Zimoja that she shot her last episode in August.  "My last day was extremely emotional,' she says. "Simply because of the scenes I was shooting, they were emotional but overall, it was an exciting day for me to welcome change.'

THE STORY

Lindiwe recently became pregnant with Nhlamulo's child but disturbingly, Lindiwe started feeling abnormally ill and found out that she had a chronic Illness. As her condition worsened, she was forced into a choice between the survival of her baby or having an abortion to ensure her own survival. Lindiwe decided that after all she had gone through in life, she would take the risk of keeping her baby, and fight to the bitter end. Nomvelo says she will be pursuing her other passions. "I don't want to be just known as Nomvelo 'the actress' but as Nomvelo 'the artist. I can't wait to let you guys into this new journey,' she says. "But I am so grateful to have been privileged enough to wor kwith giants in this industry. My on-screen mother and father, Gcinile Nkosi and Patrick Mofokeng, Ntate Jerry Mofokeng Wa Makhetha, Bongile Mantsai, Masasa Mbangeni, Sihle Ndaba. These are just to make a few of the great people I will miss,' she says. " I've learned so much from them. Every day on set was like a drama class, always something new to learn.'
